Freshwater Fish vs. Ocean Fish
By John Sarkis
Difference Between the two
If you were raised in a place like China, South American Amazon, or some parts of Europe for example: chances are you've never tasted ocean fish before. There are places in China for example, were people have only eaten carp and/or catfish, nothing else. Likewise, there are places like Mexico where people live close to, say for example 'The Sea of Cortez' (greatest fishing paradise on earth), chances are you've never tasted freshwater fish like catfish or tilapia in your entire life....
If someone from an inner region of say China comes to the USA and tastes swordfish or halibut, they may not care much for the taste of such fish. The reason for this is, they are use to the taste of freshwater fish, so the taste of ocean fish won't quite do it for their taste buds. Someone who has only eaten ocean fish their life, may not care much for the taste of freshwater fish or vice versa
One of the ways to overcome this is by eating in good Chinese restaurants. Chinese people seem to know how to prepare both freshwater and ocean fish very well. Schezuan, Mandarin, and other cultures and communities in China, know how to prepare both freshwater and ocean fish exceptionally well. Chinese spices and sauces seem to compliment most types of fishes well. Whether it's tilapia, whitefish or swordfish, Chinese people do a really good job in getting the best taste out of all of them.

Crappies,Bluegills,RedBreast,Yellow and White Perch and small to medium sized Catfish is what I eat from clean freshwater sources. As for saltwater Croakers,Spot,Gray & Spotted Trout,Flounder,Bluefish and BlackDrum this is what I eat because it's what I mainly catch!
Hi joesmoke74
The taste of fresh vs ocean fish is a polemic in itself. I'm one of the few that enjoys the taste of both. However, there are some dishes that taste better with fresh water fish and others that taste better with ocean fish.

Thanks for your very clear explanation. I loved the pictures.
Thanks Ask DJ Lyons - I love seafood, though semantically speaking, fresh water fish isn't really seafood....
Take care!

I grew up on the coast of Calif., and grew up on real seafood. When I first tasted trout, I thought is was sort of tasteless. It's funny how our taste buds change and evolve. Great Hub.
Thank you duffsmom
A fishing buddy of mine came from a small village inland in Mexico, and had only tasted fresh water fish. He said when he first tasted seafood, it was very icky to him. I must say I like both, but my favorite is Swordfish and Kingfish.

Nice hub on the difference between freshwater and saltwater fish. I prefer to eat saltwater fish but I love catching freshwater fish with lures. Thanks for sharing!
